Traveling with Enteral Formula

I have tried shipping enteral formula ahead when traveling abroad. It creates more problems and cost than it is worth. Italy, for example, has strict import rules on liquids. I had two cases of formula held by customs in Venice; it was only released after the Hilton concierge went nuts on them. Then I paid not only $200 (US) to the courier, but a fine of €300 (euro)!

A friend who was traveling abroad asked if I would suggest he bring his formula with him or buy it there. My vote was bring it with you. The increased hassle of packing one or two sturdy wheeled duffels pales in comparison to being out of food with a shipping error. That’s what I do for short trips.

If I know a familiar product is available at my destination, though, I will get it there.

I have seen basic formulas everywhere in the world. Mostly formulas like Boost® or Ensure®. Sometimes you can see what’s available in other countries by checking manufacturers’ websites. For examples, see www.nestlehealthscience.com/info/change-location and www.abbott.com/global-sites.html. [Editor’s note: Check with your health-care provider before you make substitutions.]

I would also suggest contacting the airline customer service in advance of your trip. You should be able to get medical exemption on luggage fees. Do not leave this until you show up at the counter, as few line staff have the authority to waive costs.
