Making friends with kids his own age has always been extremely hard for Austin. He’s shy, doesn’t like the

 Austin and Ellie at camp.

questions other kids ask about his IV backpack, why he has a nurse that follows him around school, and why he can’t eat certain food. On the playground he often can’t keep up with the other kids and doesn’t know how to join in play with them. He prefers to isolate himself from other kids when he’s uncomfortable and spent many days at recess sitting by himself….He prefers “grown-up friends.”

Last year I really hoped camp would do for Austin what it’s done for so many other kids— challenge him beyond his comfort zone and allow him to feel comfortable trying to make a friend at camp with the help of the counselors….He had a wonderful time at camp last year and brought home great stories [but]…he really didn’t want to interact with the other campers at all, the counselors told me.

Austin was so excited to go back to camp this summer. Wood shop and visiting the tree house were some of his favorite activities. I couldn’t help but hope maybe this year…he’d experience the magic of camp friendships….

[When] I went to pick Austin up in the dining hall [I]… couldn’t believe my eyes. There he was, happy as could be, sitting at the table mixed in with the other kids from his cabin. He was playing a card game with one of his cabin mates and introduced me to his new best friend! And then Austin introduced me to his other camper friends, one by one, by name. He struggles with feeling down and doesn’t smile a lot, but yesterday he had the biggest smile I’ve ever seen!...Stubborn and determined as he was to have no friends, camp won. And as a result, so did Austin.

Thank you so much for giving Austin the gift of camp through the Oley Tim Weaver Camp Scholarship.
