Every child deserves a chance to attend summer camp.

Even children who have severe disabilities and would otherwise be at home all summer.

S.T.E.P.S. Inc. in Savannah has put that philosophy into practice since the certified camp was founded in 1986 by a taskforce of local citizens and professionals in collaboration with Savannah-Chatham County public schools.

The Summer Therapeutic Enrichment Program of Savannah provides a four- to six-week day camp for school-age kids who have severe physical and intellectual disabilities.

Field trips, socializing, arts and crafts, dance and music classes, cheer lessons, adapted culinary experiences, visits from community volunteers, and more are all part of S.T.E.P.S. camp.

“These kids deserve a camp just like everyone else,” said S.T.E.P.S. President Kevin Heyman, father of 10-year-old camper Eli. He is also a special education teacher with SCCPSS. He and his wife Michelle, S.T.E.P.S. treasurer, have held various roles with the program over the years.

Funding for this independent nonprofit comes comes from a variety of sources.
