- Meet Consumers/Patients
My connection with the Oley Foundation began about six years ago. My mother suffered a stroke during a routine surgery to repair a broken arm. After a series of complications, she ended up with severe short bowel syndrome and was started on home parenteral nutrition (HPN).
After she improved and became medically stable, I assumed she would go to a skilled nursing facility. I was shocked to find out that there was not a facility in the state of Texas that would accept patients on HPN due to the high cost and a flat reimbursement rate for Medicare patients. At this point, I knew that we would take my Mom home. I was very confident about my ability to complete all the bathing, dressing, transfers, etc. due to my professional skills, but the thought of ostomy care and HPN management was overwhelming!
I found your website pretty early in the process, and I have to say, it was my lifeline while we made the transition to the home environment. I can’t tell you how comforting it was to know I had a resource at any time of the day or night!
My mom lived for six months at home; we made the most of every minute. It’s been five years since her passing and I always said that if I had the chance, I would make a donation as my way of saying thanks. I’m so happy that 2015 was my chance! Thank you so much for all your great organization does.
