Bright Ideas for HPEN Consumers
Making Light of a Portable Pump
If the backpack containing your portable pump, power pack and nutrition is too heavy to carry, try using a cart. The simple metal luggage-carrying carts you see in airports are fine, or you might try constructing a homemade cart like the one my husband made. Be sure the cart can stand on its own, so you are free to use both of your hands if you need them.
Unclogging a Catheter Line
If your catheter becomes occluded, be sure to check all tube repairs before having your line replaced. The diameter at repair sites can be slightly narrower than the rest of the tube and thus may be causing the occlusion. This step is well worth your effort since the cost and convenience of repairing your line is significantly less than that of replacing your line.
Removing an Iodine Stain
Eliminating an Iodine stain may be easier than you think! Simply saturate the area with milk and let stand. Sometimes the stain will disappear before your very eyes.

Reducing Your Aluminum Intake
If you need to cut down on aluminum, some unsuspecting places you may find it are in antacids, antiperspirants, baking powder, cake mixes, Carafate, Stella Dora snacks, hand cream and cosmetics. Be sure to read the label of all food and personal hygiene products.
Avoiding TPN-Related Leg Cramps
One night recently I was running late. And despite knowing that the contents of the bag was a little chilly, I began my infusion. OUCH! Leg cramps all night! I really believe that the temperature of the solutions need to be close to, or above room temperature to eliminate cramping.
