Declogging Your Tube with Pancreatic Enzyme
In the past, clinicians had used a pancreatic enzyme in combination with sodium bicarbonate to declog feeding tubes when flushing with warm water alone wouldn’t work. This option has been unavailable since pancreatic enzymes were required to undergo review by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). At first the only pancreatic enzymes to complete the review process had an enteric coating on the pill/tablet that prevented them from being effective in declogging tubes. In the fall of 2012, a pancreatic enzyme that does not have an enteric coating (Viokace™, Aptalis Pharma) was approved by the FDA. We are hopeful that testing will show that Viokace™ will be an appropriate alternative for declogging tubes again soon. Stayed tuned for updates on testing.
