O-rings Help Tubing Stay Connected

One Oley member has found that O-rings help resolve leaky connections between an administration set and

the ENFit transitional connector. While the administration sets in question have recently been discontinued (see details below), the solution may be helpful for consumers having trouble with leaking and/or getting a tight seal when using other brands or tubing products.

"We have had a lot of success with the O-rings and one lasts for about a month, so we aren't having to buy a lot of them. We found the O-rings at Lowe's to start and tried three sizes. We found one that fit and started buying them on Amazon. We rinse them after every use and use them again with the next bag." (see photos.)

Step 1:  Gather end of tubing, black O-ring, and white transitional connector.  Step. 2:  Place O-ring on end of tubing. Step 3:  Screw the end of the tubing to the white transitional connector with the O-ring in between. Be careful not to apply too much pressure.

Leaking Product Discontinued

As listed on the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website (www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfRes/res.cfm?ID=141973), in November 2015 MOOG Medical sent a letter to customers saying it would “cease production of all its enteral administration sets using ENFit connectors and transition back to the previous revision of the product codes that do not include the ENFit connector (INF0020, INF0500, INF1200, and GR1200). MOOG Medical will produce the previous revision until a solution to the problem is found.” The problem cited is a “potential for leaking between the purple ENFit connector and the white transitional stepped connector due to cracking or breaking of the purple connector.”

In an update provided in early March, MOOG notes that they have “made significant progress on a resolution to the leaking/cracking issues” and are “working to make their updated ENFit administration sets available to support the introduction of ENFit syringes and feeding tubes.” MOOG adds that, “The manufacturer cannot endorse [the solution described above] as it has not conducted any functional or biocompatibility testing on these devices.”
