ASPEN (American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition)

ASPEN continues to advocate for our patients and clinicians during this critical shortage of amino acids and will continue with weekly updates. This week we want to emphasize safety and quality during this amino acids shortage as well as shortages of any component used in parenteral nutrition (PN) admixtures. Errors and adverse events can occur in any step of the PN Use Process from prescribing PN, verification and review of the PN order, compounding the PN admixture, and administering PN to patients. Make sure to report any errors or adverse events associated with PN to your institution’s safety officer as well as to the Institute for Safe Medication Practices Medication Error Reporting Program and to FDA MedWatch . Gathering information nationally through these patient safety venues allows the field to learn important lessons on PN shortage management that can prevent errors in the future.
